Beaver Reliever

Valeria Gosse looks at Traditional vs Natural medicine options to help relieve the most common problems south of the border.

Problem: Low Libido

Doctor:

The brain is the most important sexual organ in the female body so it's no wonder that the most common cause of lagging mojos is relationship issues. It's important to address these with you GP or counselor. There are physiological issues that may also interfere with your libido, the most common being the Pill. Your doctor may recommend changing to another contraceptive, such as condoms or an Intra Uterine Device (IUD).

Naturopath:

Hormone irregularity, emotional disinterest, stress and fatigue are all major mojo killers. Your Naturopath may recommend nurturing the nervous system and allowingfor more rest. Sexual tonic herbs such as Tribulus, Shatavari and Damiana are another option as they are great ibido boosters. Magnesium rich foods such as leafy greens, wholegrains and cocoa will also assist in this department and improve overall mood

Problem: Thrush

Doctor:

Your GP will most take a vaginal swab to confirm your symptoms are due to thrush. Many of us confuse normal discharge with thrush, and there are a host of other infections that have similar symptoms. Thrush is commonly caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans which is a form of yeast. The most common treatment is an oral tablet such as DiFLUCAN One, however some require a two-week course of boric acid pessaries (egg shaped capsules that dissolve in the vagina). The Pill can also be a culprit, so other contraception methods may be advised.

Natoropath:

Antibiotics, bad diet, over consumption of sugar, alcohol and stress can all cause this little nasty. Your first step should be eliminating all of the above. Probiotic supplements will help restore the 'good' bacteria, which will guard against the overgrowth of candida. Natural live yoghurt can also be used to deal with thrush. You can eat more of it or insert it into your vagina. The key is not the yoghurt itself but the bacteria, lactobacillus acidophilus, in the yoghurt. This helps the body maintain, or regain, its natural pH level and keeps yeast under control.

Problem: UTIs

Doctor:

Most GPs will require a urine specimen to determine which bacteria is involved. You will then be prescribed an antibiotic, along with increased fluid intake. Sachets such as Ural will help reduce that horrible burning feeling, as they make your urine alkaline (non acidic). Recurrent UTIs must be addressed by your GP, and may require an antibiotic or urinary antiseptic tablet to take after sex. To minimise the risk of you getting a UTI make sure you pass urine after intercourse.

Naturopath:

The major cause of UTIs is the presence of Escherichia Coli (a bacteria commonly found in the digestive system) in your urinary tract. Drinking large amounts of water with cranberry supplements will assist in flushing it out. Urinary antiseptic herbs, such as Uva Ursi, Cratavea and Buchu can reduce symptoms, while other immune herbs such as Echinacea, can also guard against infection. Always remember to wipe from front to back when going to the toilet.

Problem: Dry Vagina

Doctor:

Vaginal Dryness - especially during intercourse - is a common symptom of relationship problems. These must be addressed with your GP or counselor. Low oestrogen levels can also be the culprit, for which vaginal tablets and creams may be prescribed. Allow more time for foreplay, and use water based lubricants during sex to help the physical symptoms.

Naturopath:

Some medications, low oestrogen or lack of arousal may cause a dry vagina. Herbs such as Chaste Tree, Shatavari and Black Cohosh may assist in treating hormone related problems. Soy products are a great oestrogen booster.
